Weekly – Runway Renegades
Fancy yourself as a fashionista? Come and strut your stuff, every weekend from 3pm, at MoMa. To enter: meet one of our wondrous winged monkeys, Nat, by the Heavy Metal Retaining Bar at 2.45pm, and ensure you’re teaming with that week’s market theme. Snaps from the parade will be shared via the @MoMaHobart Instagram account, and all participants are invited back to participate in our final parade of epic proportions, with special guest Alexi Freeman, on Easter Sunday. So Gucci right now, guys. As an aside, keep your peepers peeled for other fashions on the field at MoMa.
24 January AUSTRALIANA THEME
Sport a pair of teeny tiny stubbies, sip on an Illusion, and hit a six in a session of backyard cricket this Sunday at MoMa. There’ll also be battle of the barbies.
31 January GARDEN SWAP THEME
Hide your lemons and your limes because this week we are running our very first produce swap. Bring along items such as seeds, seedlings, veggies, and fruit, and use it as currency. Free, green fun.
How it works: On arrival at Mona Market, participants will be asked to exchange their items for tokens at the Plant Swap marquee. These tokens are treated like cash so keep them safe until the swap.
At 2pm, participants will be able to exchange their tokens for items. One token can be exchanged for one item, regardless of the item’s value. It’s likely that some items will be in high demand. A sudden death match of rock-scissors-paper will be fought to determine the winner. Seedlings from 24 Carrot Garden and Hobart City Farm will also be available to buy.
7 February GIN PICNIC THEME
From an Addams Family-inspired Runway Renegades, to a gut reaction mural, and all manner of gin-based treats, this weekend’s MoMa has you covered. Wear something white.
14 February VALENTINE’S DAY THEME
Can you hear a colour? Can you eat a sound? Dr JuJu Galaxy is the creator of Sweet Tribology, an international radio art project featuring forty women from ten countries, who create audible records from chocolate. Today, Juju will treat you to a radiophonic experience in the depths of the Barrel Room, complete with a champagne bar. Ooh la la.
21 FEBRUARY WATER EVENTS THEME
Wet your whistle with all manner of water events at this weekend’s MoMa. Gather around the Heavy Metal Oyster Raft at 11am for an official unveiling of Wise Heads. Later on, make a splash with the MONA GASP! SWIM or watch kayaks paint the river. On higher ground: sibling rivalry plays out atop the tennis court, performers are suspended from silk, and fashionistas take to Runway Renegades.
28 FEBRUARY LUNAR NEW YEAR THEME
Celebrate a slightly belated Lunar New Year by monkeying around with us. We share 98.8 per cent of our DNA with chimps so lets celebrate what makes us alike– our digestive systems. Whether you would like to eat your way to better health, join in Selena de Carvalho’s drawing marathon of epic proportions, or enjoy a special performance by the Tasmanian Chinese Society Taiji Group, our market has something for everyone.
6 MARCH MIDDLE-EASTERN THEME
Rock the Kasbah at today’s Middle Eastern-themed market. Music by Ahsan Baltastani & Apoorv David, along with Santhanam Vaidhyanathan, and others.
13 MARCH MARDI GRAS THEME
A shout out to the Sydney Mardi Gras. Rainbow hues encouraged.
20 March FITNESS THEME
If the Mona GASP! Fun Run ain’t your cup of tea, come on down for some Zumba or a friendly game of volleyball on the lawn. Failing that, watch it all unfold from the comfort of a beanbag—preferably with a Hendrick’s or Moorilla in hand.
27 March EASTER THEME
Hop along to the last market of 2016. Nuff said.
In 2016 Mona Market (MoMa) is all about building happiness and health and making friends with the little critters that live inside our gut. By exploring the myriad of microbiomes that are present in fermented food and drink, we will look at how the gut is linked to the brain and how nurturing this connection can be beneficial to your overall wellbeing. MoMa Fermentation LAB is a one-hour, hands-on fermentation class held on the lawns at Mona Market. The fee to attend includes the recipe, ingredients, a 1-litre fermentation jar with airlock and weight and 4 x 250ml storage jars with lids. Participants are invited to return to MoMa for a cocktail party (the price of which is included in the fee) on 27 March, the final market for the season, where they can bring their little bundles of fermented joy for a jar swap with other ferment enthusiasts (or, as we like to call ourselves, ‘fermenthusiasts’). We supply the aprons, chopping boards and bowls. Attendees are asked to BYO knife (stored safely and discreetly in a bag). There will be a Fermentation LAB held every week at Mona Market from 24 January until 13 March from 11am – 12pm.
